Distance and journey time
From Place Kléber to Obernai market square: about 29 km, around 30 minutes by car depending on traffic (OSRM road calculation). Our Wine Route guide puts Obernai at about 30 to 40 minutes from Strasbourg.
Why go to Obernai?
- The old centre: market square, half-timbered houses, an easy walk.
- The Wine Route: Obernai is the northern entrance to the route, closer to Strasbourg than Colmar, according to our guide Alsace wine route guide.
- The Christmas market: in 2026, from Friday 27 November to Thursday 31 December, closed on 25 December (source: Obernai tourist office). According to the same source, free “Pass’O” shuttles serve the centre from the outer car parks at weekends. See Wine village Christmas tour.
- A lunch or a weekend without having to drive after a meal.
What about public transport?
Obernai is on the TER line towards Molsheim and the Vosges foothills, according to our guide Getting around Alsace without a car. It is a good solution in the daytime. Check times on the TER Grand Est site or SNCF Connect. The van is useful for a group, with suitcases, or in the evening.
No border
Obernai is in France: no special ID is needed for the trip. Keep yours with you anyway, as you always should when travelling.
