From Place Kléber to Selestat station (the arrival point we used): about 52 km, around 45 minutes by car depending on traffic (OSRM road calculation).

Why go to Selestat?

  • Haut-Koenigsbourg castle, perched in the mountains above the town. Its hours change with the season (early October 2026: 9:30 am to 6 pm; shorter in winter, with a break at midday). Closed on 1 January and on 25 and 26 December. Check haut-koenigsbourg.fr before you visit.
  • Christmas: in 2026 the market runs from 20 November to 27 December, on the Place d’Armes, Place du Dr-Kubler and Place de la Victoire (source: Selestat tourist office). The town highlights the first written mention of the Christmas tree, in 1521; an exhibition “The history of the Christmas tree” is planned at Saint-Georges church from 21 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Market hours to be confirmed.
  • A stop between Strasbourg and Colmar: Selestat is on the way, on the same train line.
  • The Wine Route: Selestat is a handy starting point for the neighbouring villages.

What about public transport?

The train is the simplest option in the daytime: Selestat is on the TER line between Strasbourg and Colmar, according to our guide Getting around Alsace without a car. For the castle, a bus shuttle (line 500) leaves from Selestat station. According to the castle’s website, it resumed on 28 February 2026 and runs until 3 January 2027, with times that vary by period: check the official timetable before you go. The van is useful outside those periods, for a group, or to get from the castle to the town centre without waiting.
