Distance and journey time
From Place Kléber to Kehl market square: about 7.5 km, around 15 minutes by car depending on traffic (OSRM road calculation, destination in the centre of Kehl). The route crosses the Rhine by one of the road bridges.
Why go to Kehl?
- To cross the Rhine on foot or by bike: the Mimram footbridge links the Garden of Two Banks on the Strasbourg side with the one in Kehl.
- To catch a train in Germany: Kehl station is on the Strasbourg to Offenburg line.
- To start a Black Forest trip: you are in Germany as soon as you cross the bridge, and the first villages are about 40 minutes away (see our guide The Black Forest from Strasbourg).
- For a meeting, a restaurant or some shopping across the border, without looking for parking.
What about public transport?
This is the easiest trip to make without a car: tram line D from Strasbourg goes straight to Kehl, according to CTS. If you travel light and live near a stop, it is the right choice. Check the CTS website or app for the ticket that is valid for Kehl and for the timetable.
The van is more useful with suitcases, children, a group, elderly parents, or at a time when the tram does not suit you. It drops you at your exact address, or as close as it can get.
ID for the border
You are leaving France for Germany: bring your ID card or passport, children included. Checks may take place at the border. Travellers from outside the European Union should bring their passport and, if needed, a Schengen visa.
