Distance and journey time
From Place Kléber to Offenburg station (the arrival point we used): about 25 km, around 30 minutes by car depending on traffic (OSRM road calculation).
Why go to Offenburg?
- To catch a train in Germany. Our guide Getting around Alsace without a car notes that some Black Forest sights can be reached by train via Offenburg. If your connection is very early or very late, a driver saves you the changes with suitcases.
- To set off into the Black Forest. Gengenbach, a medieval town known for its giant Advent calendar in December, is about 40 to 45 minutes from Strasbourg (see the guide The Black Forest from Strasbourg).
- For a business meeting or a trade show in town: the trip is short and the price is known in advance.
What about public transport?
Trains connect Strasbourg and Offenburg, on the line that goes through Kehl. It is a good option in the daytime if you travel light and your hotel is near the station. Check times and fares on SNCF Connect or the Deutsche Bahn website, as they change from day to day. A van is more comfortable with suitcases, with a group, or when you arrive outside train hours.
ID for the border
Offenburg is in Germany: bring your ID card or passport, for children too. Checks may take place at the border. Travellers from outside the European Union should bring their passport and, if needed, a Schengen visa.
