Distance and journey time
From Place Kléber to Basel station (Basel SBB, the arrival point we used): about 138 km, around 1 hour 40 minutes by car depending on traffic (OSRM road calculation). The time can vary at rush hours and at the border.
Why go to Basel?
- Museums: the city has many museums, including the Kunstmuseum (fine arts) and the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen, about 15 minutes by tram from the centre.
- Trade fairs and conferences: Basel hosts major international fairs, such as Art Basel. Check the organisers for dates.
- The station: Basel SBB is a major station with trains across Switzerland and abroad.
- EuroAirport: the airport sits on the border, with a French side and a Swiss side. If that is where you are going, it is a different page: EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse transfer. For Zurich, see Zurich airport transfer.
What about public transport?
Trains connect Strasbourg and Basel, some of them direct, via Colmar and Mulhouse, depending on the timetable. Check SNCF Connect or the SBB (Swiss federal railways) website. The train is a good option if you travel light. A van is simpler if you are several people, with suitcases or children, or if the train times do not suit you. In Basel itself, trams and buses serve the city well.
ID: the Swiss border
Basel is in Switzerland: bring a valid ID card or passport for every passenger, children included. Checks may take place at the border, and customs rules apply to goods (alcohol, tobacco, cash, etc.): find out before you leave. The Swiss currency is the Swiss franc. Travellers from outside the European Union should bring their passport and, if needed, a visa.
