Strasbourg Christmas Market 2026: practical guide and private van service

Strasbourg calls itself the “Capital of Christmas”, and in December it is hard to argue. The Christkindelsmärik, created in 1570 and widely described as the oldest Christmas market in France, has grown into around eight markets spread across the old town, with a giant tree on Place Kléber and the cathedral lit up above the chalets.

It is also one of the busiest places in Europe in December, with streets closed to cars and security checks at the entrances. This page explains what we know about the 2026 edition, how access works, when to go to avoid the crowds, and how a private driver can make the day easier, especially if you arrive from an airport or travel as a group.

At the time of writing (October 2026), the City of Strasbourg has confirmed that the market opens on Friday 27 November 2026. The closing date, opening hours and security arrangements for 2026 have not been published yet. Below, we give the 2025 arrangements as an indication and mark them clearly. On 25 December, do not count on Strasbourg’s chalets: in 2025 they had already closed on the 24th. If you are in Alsace on Christmas Day, Colmar’s markets are open (10:00–20:00 in 2026).

What you will find: the markets of the Grande Île

The official site lists these market areas (2025 list; the 2026 line-up should be similar but has not been confirmed):

  • Christkindelsmärik, Place Broglie: the historic market and the largest.
  • Au pied du Grand Sapin, Place Kléber: around the city’s giant Christmas tree.
  • Autour de la Cathédrale: chalets on the cathedral and castle squares.
  • La Petite France: Place Benjamin-Zix and Place Saint-Thomas, by the canals and half-timbered houses.
  • Le marché OFF: an alternative, more sustainable market on Place Grimmeissen.

Everything is within walking distance, but “walking distance” in December means slow walking in thick crowds. Plan at least half a day to see four or five areas without rushing, and an evening if you want the illuminations.

Access and security: what changes in December

During market hours, the Grande Île (the island that contains the old town) is closed to motor vehicles. The official FAQ is clear: traffic is “strictly regulated and prohibited in the Grande Île during market hours”, with controls at the bridges.

In 2025, according to the regional press:

  • the car ban applied from 11:30 to 21:00 every day of the market;
  • authorised vehicles could only enter through four checkpoints (Abattoir, Paris, Fonderie and Corbeau bridges);
  • large bags were systematically searched, and pedestrians and cyclists could be checked at random on the bridges;
  • the tram stops Broglie, Alt Winmärik and Langstross/Grand’Rue were closed during market hours, while Homme de Fer stayed open;
  • some busy streets became one-way for pedestrians at weekends.

The 2026 arrangements are usually announced in mid-November. We will update this section.

What this means for you: no vehicle, including ours, can drop you in front of a chalet on the Grande Île during market hours. A good driver knows the closest legal drop-off point for the market you want to start with, and where to pick you up afterwards without making you walk back across the city with shopping bags.

We drop you at one of the security checkpoints at the entrances to the closed zone, the one closest to your destination, and pick you up there at the agreed time.

When to go: avoiding the crowds

The City of Strasbourg gives a clear answer: Mondays, Tuesdays and mornings are the calmest moments. Wednesday afternoons (French school children have the afternoon off), Friday evenings and weekends are the busiest.

Our suggestions:

  • Arrive at opening time (11:30 in 2025) on a weekday and do the narrow areas first: Petite France and around the cathedral.
  • Leave Place Kléber and the tree for dusk, when the lights come on.
  • On a Saturday, consider spending the day in a wine village or in Colmar and only coming into Strasbourg after dinner, when day-trippers start heading home.
  • Keep your bag small: it speeds up the checks.

Arriving from an airport or train station

Many visitors fly into Frankfurt, Basel-Mulhouse (EuroAirport), Zurich or Strasbourg-Entzheim, or arrive by TGV at Strasbourg station. A private transfer is the simplest way to reach your hotel with luggage, especially if your hotel is inside or next to the closed area.

Things we handle for you:

  • Flight tracking: if your flight is late, we wait.
  • Meet and greet at arrivals, help with luggage.
  • Hotel access: if your hotel is inside the Grande Île, we agree in advance on the closest point and the time window when access is possible.

Make it a bigger day: Strasbourg + Colmar or the wine villages

Because Strasbourg’s markets open late morning and are at their best after dark, they pair well with a daytime trip south:

  • Colmar by day, Strasbourg by night: Colmar opens at 10:00 at weekends and 11:00 on weekdays in 2026.
  • Obernai + Strasbourg: Obernai is about 30 km away, with 45 chalets on five squares. An easy half-day.
  • Wine villages + Strasbourg: Riquewihr, Kaysersberg (Friday to Sunday only) or Eguisheim in the day, back for the illuminations.

Train, tram or private van?

If you are staying in Strasbourg and travelling light, you do not need us for the market itself: walk, or use the tram (Homme de Fer stayed open in 2025). If you drive in from outside, the city’s park-and-ride car parks (€4.20 per day with a return tram ticket for everyone in the car, 2025 rate) are a sensible option.

A private van makes sense when:

  • you are 4 to 8 people and want to travel together, door to door;
  • you arrive from an airport with luggage;
  • you want to combine Strasbourg with Colmar or villages in the same day;
  • you have small children, elderly relatives or someone with reduced mobility (the city lends wheelchairs free of charge at the Place Kléber information chalet, against ID; we get you as close as access rules allow).

How much does a private van cost?

Price for the whole vehicle (up to 8 passengers):

  • Evening at the Strasbourg Christmas market (return from your hotel): from €105
  • Airport → your Strasbourg hotel: from €55
  • Day trip Strasbourg + Colmar: price on request

What to eat and buy

  • Vin chaud: mulled wine, red or white (the white version is very Alsatian). Many stalls use a deposit cup you can keep as a souvenir or return.
  • Bredele: small Christmas biscuits, sold by weight in many shapes and flavours.
  • Pain d’épices: spiced gingerbread, often from local bakers.
  • Bretzels and kougelhopf: the classics of Alsatian bakeries.
  • Flammekueche (tarte flambée): better enjoyed sitting down in a winstub than standing in a queue.
  • Gifts: glass baubles, wooden decorations, Alsatian pottery, local wine.

Your driver is happy to share the addresses (winstubs, mulled wine stands, bakeries…) his clients love most.
