Before you start

  • The centre, the Grande Île, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is best seen on foot: much of it is pedestrian. Wear comfortable shoes, as the ground is cobbled.
  • The tram (six lines, A to F, run by the CTS) complements walking. Tickets are sold at machines or in the CTS app.
  • From the station or airport to a hotel in Strasbourg by van: from 55 euros.

The itinerary

Morning: the cathedral and the Grande Île

Start with Notre-Dame Cathedral. If you like heights, the platform is reached by 332 spiral steps, at 66 metres, with a view over the city, the Vosges and the Black Forest. Then stroll to Place Kléber and Place Gutenberg.

12:30: the astronomical clock

The parade of figures takes place every day at 12:30, with exceptions (some Sundays and feast days). Tickets are sold on the day only. According to the cathedral’s website, there is no presentation during the Christmas market. Arrive a little early.

Lunch: a winstub

A winstub is a traditional Alsatian restaurant. Book in advance, especially at weekends.

Afternoon: Petite France and the water

Walk to Petite France, a district of half-timbered houses and canals, very photogenic and very busy in the middle of the day. Then board a boat trip on the Ill: it circles the Grande Île and passes through the European quarter.

Optional: a museum or the European Parliament

  • The City’s museums are free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month and for under-18s all year, according to the City.
  • The Parlamentarium Simone Veil and the hemicycle can be visited free of charge with physical photo ID. Check hours on the Parliament’s website. See European Parliament sessions.

End of the day

A last walk in the Krutenau or the Neustadt, and dinner. For the ride back to the station or airport, our service runs 24/7.
