Visiting Strasbourg as a group: tips for a smooth day out
A family reunion, a group of friends, a society outing, a business delegation, a multi-generation trip from overseas… Exploring Strasbourg together is a joy. It also takes a little planning: meeting up, moving as one, finding a table for everyone and not losing anyone along the way.
Here are our simple tips, from drivers who know the city well.

1. Pick the right transport
Up to 8 people: one van. The ideal size. Everyone travels together with their luggage, and the price is per vehicle, not per person.
More than 8 people? Call us: we organise several vehicles on quote. It is often more flexible than a coach: each vehicle can drop off as close as possible, and the group can split up in the afternoon if people want different things.
Large groups by coach. Tour coaches face strict rules in Strasbourg. According to the access map published by the tourist office, they must use designated drop-off and parking areas such as Parc de l’Étoile, and some zones closer to the centre require prior authorisation. Check with the tourist office before you travel.
Good to know Much of the Grande Île is pedestrianised. No vehicle can drop you outside every sight. Expect some walking and agree on a clear meeting point.
2. Agree on an easy meeting point
In crowds, especially in December, it is easy to get separated. Choose somewhere simple:
- the square in front of the cathedral;
- Place Kléber;
- Place Gutenberg.
Set up a WhatsApp group before you leave and share your location. It is also the easiest way to stay in touch with your driver.
3. Book ahead what needs booking
Restaurants. A table for 8, 10 or 15, especially in a winstub (a traditional Alsatian restaurant), needs booking. At weekends and in December, it is essential.
A guided tour. Strasbourg’s tourist office offers guided tours. A guide brings the city’s history to life, and nobody has to wonder where to go next.
The European Parliament. Groups of 20 to 100 people can book a free visit. Parliament recommends booking 2 to 3 months ahead. See European Parliament sessions in Strasbourg.
The astronomical clock. The automata parade is at 12:30. Tickets are sold on the day only, with a group rate from 12 people, according to the cathedral’s website. There is no show during the Christmas market.
4. Think about everyone in the group
Every group has different paces. A few ideas:
- With older relatives: plan seated breaks (a coffee, a boat trip on the Ill). The van can drop off and pick up as close as the rules allow.
- With children: the city’s museums are free for under-18s, according to the City of Strasbourg.
- On the first Sunday of the month: the city’s museums are free for everyone. Handy for a group.
- Mixed languages: our drivers speak English, French and Arabic.
5. A sample group day
Morning: stroll through the Grande Île and Petite France while it is still quiet.
Lunch: a winstub, booked in advance.
Afternoon, two options:
- stay in town: boat trip, a museum, the European district;
- or head out by van to Colmar or the Wine Route. Strasbourg → Colmar costs about €190 one way for the van, about €360 for a same-day return. See our Colmar day trip guide and Alsace Wine Route guide.
In December, finish at the Christmas market. A Christmas market evening in Strasbourg by van starts from €105. All our tips are in the Strasbourg Christmas market guide.
