Distance and journey time
From Place Kléber to Karlsruhe main station (the arrival point we used): about 85 km, around 1 hour 5 minutes by car depending on traffic (OSRM road calculation).
Why go to Karlsruhe?
- Work and business meetings. Karlsruhe is home to the KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), a major technical university, and hosts companies and trade fairs. For a delegation or colleagues, one van saves several cars.
- The law. It is the seat of Germany’s Federal Constitutional Court (Bundesverfassungsgericht).
- Culture. The fan-shaped palace and the ZKM (art and media centre) are among the best-known sights.
- The station. The main station is a starting point for the rest of Germany.
Do not mix them up: Baden-Airpark, also called “Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden airport”, is a small airport about 58 km from Strasbourg. It is not in the city of Karlsruhe. See the page Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden airport transfer.
What about public transport?
The train remains a good solution in the daytime: Karlsruhe is on the north-south rail axis along the Rhine, and some services are direct while others need a change. Check times and fares on SNCF Connect or the Deutsche Bahn website. A van is more practical for a group, with suitcases, or early in the morning and late at night.
ID for the border
Karlsruhe is in Germany: bring your ID card or passport. Checks may take place at the border. Travellers from outside the European Union should bring their passport and, if needed, a Schengen visa.
